Patmos

Patmos has an indefinable je ne sais quoi – an otherworldly quality that radiates from its crowning glory, the medieval monastery of St John. This turreted fortress, bursting with Byzantine relics, is named after John the Divine, who conjured up his apocalyptic revelations in a cave nearby. Pure-white Chora, a World Heritage Site, is where A-listers and fashion editors stay. High walls and heavy doors conceal magnificent mansions dating back to the 16th century.

This place is absolutely stunning. Going up the mountain and finally seeing the panorama of the island and the white washed houses is really spectacular. The volcanic geology, with basalt formations pointing evocatively skyward and quirky islets floating just offshore, add to the island a clearly spiritual atmosphere. Excellent beaches and arguably the most varied clientele of any Greek island, ranging from backpackers to current and deposed European royalty, rank Patmos to the top Greek island destinations.

White washed houses in a warren of tiny streets with buildings covered in the most outrageous flowers await travelers in Patmos! Meet the friendly local people, lots of kitties and the dozens of little shops!

BEST THINGS TO DO
Monastery of Saint John

The monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos is the most significant cultural and religious center on the island which is visible from every part of the island and is perhaps, the first thing one will notice, as it sits high on the hill above Chora.

Cave of Apocalypse

The Cave of the Apocalypse is situated about halfway up the mountain on the Aegean island of Patmos, along the road between the villages of Chora and Skala. This grotto is believed to mark the spot where John of Patmos received his visions that he recorded in the Book of Revelation. In 1999, UNESCO declared the cave a joint World Heritage Site together with the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian.

Arki and Marathi

Arki and Marathi, just north of the islands of Patmos and Lipsi, are the most peaceful islets in the Dodecanese chain.
