Samaria Gorge Long Way

Samaria Gorge Long Way

 Come and explore
the Gorge of Samaria. This excursion is one of the longest but also the most
beautiful you can experience. Our adventure for Samaria gorge, the
longest gorge in Europe, starts at 05:30 -06:30 in the morning from
Rethymno or by pick up service at your residence.

 The gorge is
located at the south of the Chania Prefecture. It was created by the river
flowing between the main massif of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori). The gorge
is 13 km long, starting at an altitude of 1,250m at the northern entrance, and
ending at the shores of the South Cretan Sea in Agia Roumeli.

 After an initial 2
hour drive we reach the entrance on the Omalos plateau in the
White Mountains. We have the chance to have breakfast before moving on to
the Omalos Plateau and the entrance to the gorge at Xiloskalo.

The walk is
partially very difficult. It lasts approximately 5-6 hours and you need
absolutely good shoes- mountain boots or, at least, strong trainers. The
path follows the route of Taras, a river with gurgling, clear water. It gave
its name to the ancient town which was located at the end of the gorge. On the
way, we can get a glimpse of the caves that formed a natural shelter for the
Cretans. Reaching at the end of the gorge, we arrive at the village of Agia Roumeli
for a swim, recreation or a meal at the local taverns. Afterwards the ferry
takes us to Chora Sfakion, where the bus is waiting to return you to your
hotel at around 20:00-21:00 at night.

Attention: This walk is
NOT recommended for children under the age of 6, pregnant women and people
with health problems!
