Apiculture (Beekeeping)

Excursion’s meeting point is set at the City Hall of Tzermiado in the Lassithi Plateau at 10:30 a.m.

After 30 minutes of walking, we will be taken to the outdoor area, where the honeycombs are located and where we will watch a presentation on the art of beekeeping.

In detail we will reveal how the bee society is organized, what the bee casings are, what their role is in the hive and how honey, royal jelly, propolis, wax and honey’s various other by-products are produced.

Next we will move to the indoor area where the workshop is and with the help of the latest machinery, the standardization of the product is done in the most advanced way. We will also learn in detail with which piece of machinery the honey is extracted from the hive, how the separation of the products and its standardization is achieved and finally how it’s stored.

Furthermore, we will taste various types of honey and dishes. Finally, we will be taken to a traditional tavern, where we will enjoy traditional products.

You will witness up close how this small insect can produce such a sweet product, a miracle of nature and collaboration, through hard work and its remarkable organisational skills.

Cretan honey combined with local dishes is certain to awaken your taste palette revealing why today it’s Crete’s top exported product.

Who can participate in this experience?

Guests of all ages can participate as long as kids are accompanied by adults.
Please inform us of any allergies concerning bee stings, as people allergic to bees are not allowed to participate.

Long, light-coloured, comfortable clothing and closed shoes are required. Please do not wear any perfume.
